Home Business Success versus Distractions

by Tim Mershon

In the land of Home Based Business’s one of our enemies for achieving success is Distractions. They are a cunning sort and will come in the form of emails, phone calls, friends and others. I recently encountered one of the most dangerous of their kind, the “New Opportunity” or “Next big thing”

As one becomes more successful you also become sought after, such is the case with the “Head Hunters” that corporations use to find executives.

Others want to have successful people as part of their team and will seek them. Especially in the world of the internet, successful people are always looking for a home for their talents and are looked for to bring that quality to the next company.

As part of my path to success I have also sought the leaders in the industry that may be able to assist me in one way or another. As a result I have signed up for many newsletters and websites to stay abreast of how things are changing.

For the most part I am just masterminding with others and learning to take my business to the next level of success. The key is to be able to sort out the value from the junk. And believe me there is a lot of junk!

My latest battle with distraction came in the form of a new opportunity and it came from someone I had previous experience with. Since I had some past with them I agreed to get some information about the “Next Big Thing” (or NBT from now on.)

FYI: I have to share what is another phenomenon on the net these days. Prior leaders at differrent opportunities are now ship jumping. In other words they are moving from company to company as a way to generate income.

They come across the NBT or are recruited, they then ship jump to the NBT and take as many of there team with them as possible. Now there is nothing wrong with this action per se, the rich share opportunities as well. However, the ship jumpers are preying on others.

Let’s face it; many people in this business do not make any money. The ship jumpers are then approaching those people again to sell them to the NBT with them. What happens is an endless cycle of income for the jumpers and possibly an endless cycle of loss for the team members.

These leaders are using things like “Come on with me so and so, I know that you have not made any money at company “x” but you will for sure at company “y”. Join me here.”

And the cycle continues.

The problem is that it is usually not the opportunity that has let them down, but the individual themselves. With 95% of the people in a home business not having success, most of that can be attributed to lack of action and desire. It rarely has anything to do with the business system itself.

So what’s my point?

Stay focused on the task at hand.

I have been sucked in many times into the NBT’s and probably will be again. We are human and want to have instant success or at least faster.

There result for me was I shook it off and got back to work. But this little distraction cost me my most precious resource; TIME!

I am a firm believer in multiple streams of income and have nothing against new projects. However, do not allow them to eat at you time.

I let my newsletters build up all week and then take time on a Saturday or Sunday to skim them for good information. That’s it! The rest of the time I am building on my businesses that have shown me success.

Now if you’re currently involved in an opportunity that is not giving you the results you are looking for or you are nota believer in the product, then by all means you may want to consider moving on.

Before you do though, ask yourself these 3 questions and answer honestly.

1. Have I operated my business exactly as it was shown to me, am I following the system the way it was designed?

2. Have I worked my business with integrity? As in, have you done it with persistence and consistency so that you may have the results you desire?

3. Is there anything I can do that I have not already done to create the success I desire with this business? Or, have I done everything I can to make it work?

We have all heard that the definition of insanity is to do the same actions over and over and expect different results.

If I had followed that exactly I could have given myself a free pass to failure. I would have given up long before I had the chance to experience real success.

However, by being honest with myself about the three questions above I realized that I had not been working with integrity and persistence. And when I actually applied those elements with consistency I had results.

Be leery of the many guises of Distraction. They are your success enemy and are a deadly foe. Just ask the 95 % who have given up already.

To your Success,
