Develop a Goal that Inspires and Motivates You to Success
If you are looking to reach your goals you must develop one that motivates you toward achieving the results. Writing and setting the goal is not enough if you are not inspired to be successful. Here are some pointers that can assist you in goal setting.
There are many tools that can assist you in creating a goal and obtaining the desired results. One of the tools I learned when I was a machinist was the Y Diagram. Basically, we would be given a performance problem and be tasked with identifying the cause and a system to eliminate the issue.
The modified version asks you break down the goal, or results you want, to the very basics. Here is an example.
Let's use weight loss as our goal, for an example, and you are trying to get rid of those unwanted pounds. Start the process by asking why it is important for you to reach the goal. Maybe you just want to fit in your favorite pair of jeans again or a swim suit, but for most there is not enough desire to move toward that goal.
To obtain the best results you need to discover the real purpose of the goal. So ask your self again, WHY do I want to get into those jeans. Is it because it will make you feel better about yourself? Is it to finally reach your optimal weight? Whatever the reason for the jeans is, we are getting closer to your purpose for the goal.
Let's assume the weight loss is because you want to feel better about yourself. So lets ask the question again, WHY don't you feel good about yourself? Or, why do you want to feel better about yourself? Is it because the losing the weight will improve your confidence? Maybe the loss will make you feel more attractive to your spouse and improve your relationship.
Until you move past the visual impact of the jeans and find the root of your desire you are not going to be motivated. Goals without emotional impact are hard to achieve.
Discovering the emotional impact is the key to success in reaching the goal. If you are rebuilding your confidence or improving your relationships is the real reason you will be more driven. After all you do want these things, and they having meaning to you.
You see, the goal now has a defined result that motivates you to continue. The more there is at stake, the more personal and emotionally developed the goal the more there is to lose. When you have an emotional attachment to the success or failure, you will work harder and stay more committed.
The next time you are faced with creating a new goal, use this exercise. Every time you can attach real emotion to the results you will improve your chances of reaching the goal.
