How the Affiliate Marketing System Works

The affiliate marketing system has been around for a long time. By acting as a third party to connect web based merchants and service providers with customers, affiliates have worked for years to drive traffic to their client’s sites by using sites of their own. Although affiliate marketing is rich and full of ethical, helpful entrepreneurs, it is also home to spammers who were merely out to make a buck regardless of the outcome.

Affiliate Marketing Defined

Affiliate marketing, or performance marketing, is advertising to targeted people who may be looking for such a product or service. The compensation for the affiliate reflects the aim of the strategy. Put the product in front of the right people and your opportunity to make sales is increased. And since you are paid based on the results of those efforts, affiliates are often paid if only when they drive clientele to a site and they take some kind of action. Either signing up for a newsletter or providing their email so an auto responder can take over and continue the process, the ultimate plan is to produce a sale. Thereby, the affiliate gets paid and the product producer also profits. Payment Methods The vast majority of affiliate marketing systems are paid using revenue sharing. So when the affiliate drives traffic to the sales page and a product is sold, the affiliate gets paid.

A smaller group pays by cost per action. This would be a good choice for paying an affiliate if you want an action such as signing up visitors to enroll to read articles, blogs, or newsletters. The ultimate goal being for the website owner to grow his list of clients for other promotions either offered now or at a later point as they gain the trust of the client. The last option is the ‘cost per click’ or ‘pay per click’ method of payment. Every time someone clicks on your site, the affiliate receives payment. This method does not hold the affiliate as accountable for the quality of traffic driven to the site since it is not paying for the amount of time spent on the site or any action taken. It also does not pay as well for the affiliate.

Again the goal of the product producer is to grow their marketing list of potential customers so they can pre-sell other promotions.

A Turn To Regulation

In the beginning there was little regulation in affiliate marketing. This resulted in certain marketers to use less than desirable marketing methods such as spam, email spam and spamdexing to get traffic to their sites.

Lawsuits arose over trade marking and using company logos in marketing which eventually created a backlash in the industry. Search engines started to remove questionable sites and regulations were put in place that allowed those using ethical marketing methods to prosper.

An affiliate marketing system, whether in house or from an experienced affiliate, can not only increase web site traffic, but it can draw the target audience that will take action on your site.
